Since the House of Fun slot volatility is rated medium, you can expect a nice balance between the size and frequency of payouts. However, the game’s 94.96% RTP may have been competitive in 2011, but it falls short of the industry average for new slots today.

Theme & Graphics in House of Fun

This slot chronicles the mysterious adventures of Paul, Jane and their dog Chip in a haunted house. The combination of a horror theme and animated teenage characters bears more than a passing resemblance to the Scooby-Doo series. 

The reels, which are etched against the wall of a Gothic house, create a grim atmosphere. There are creepy undertones to all of the symbols, including a spooky gargoyle, villainous-looking men and an old mirror. If you were designing a haunted house, this is exactly the sort of vibe you’d go for.

Despite the game’s age, the graphics still appear quite vivid. And while there’s no persistent soundtrack, you’ll hear an Addams Family-style tune after each win, along with the clanking of the reels.

Regular Symbols

There are eight regular symbols in Betsoft’s House of Fun slot. At the top of the payout ladder, you’ll find three haunted house residents. 

The man in a green suit and his squat sidekick each pay from 0.33x to 5x for two to five on a payline. Next is the mustachioed gardener, which returns 1x, 2x and 3x for up to five-of-a-kind. 

Other symbols, in descending order of payouts, are the Mad Hatter, a cat, gargoyle, candelabra, portrait and an old mirror.

Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter resembles a magician, wearing a purple and red hat. If at least three land on the first, second or third paylines, the Mad Click Me feature triggers. 

Additionally, Mad Hatter icons pay 1.33x, 2.67x and 4x your stake when appearing on any payline.

Wilds

You won’t find a traditional wild symbol in this slot. However, during the free spins feature, the center reel becomes wild, substituting for all regular icons.  

Scatters

A jack-in-the-box symbol, dubbed a “jackbox”, is the scatter. Landing three or more on the second, third and fourth reels triggers a free spins feature. 

Door Knocker

Look out for a beastly looking door knocker. Landing three or more anywhere on the reels triggers the Escape bonus round.   

Mad Click Me

During this feature, three random tiles transform into “Click Me” images, which conceal mystery prizes. Continue hitting the tiles to accumulate cash rewards until the “Collect” sign is revealed. 

Escape 

Here, you’re led to a room with several doors. Keep opening doors, including those you’ve already opened, and collect the prizes within. The round ends when you eventually find an empty door and manage to escape.

Free Spins

Triggering the free spins feature initially rewards you with a 2x instant prize. The middle reel also becomes wild, helping you to form winning combinations. While the free spins round is ongoing, no other bonus feature can be activated.

How to Play House of Fun Online

At first, the House of Fun slot appears to be slightly complicated. Setting your desired wager involves three different sliders: “Bet”, “Bet Level” and “Number of Lines”. Once complete, click the rotating arrow icon to the right of the reels to spin. 

Land at least three matching symbols on a designated payline to win. However, the first two residents of the house, along with the cat, are exceptions. These three symbols offer payouts whenever you land just two on a line.

House of Fun Review – Our Final Verdict

It’s hard to believe that Betsoft’s House of Fun was released over a decade ago. Though a few elements betray its age, the slot could just about pass for a relatively new game from a smaller studio. The animations aren’t the slickest, but the graphics are crisp. 

There are multiple features, too, with two bonuses alongside the standard free spins. However, the concept of the Escape game seems upside-down to me, given that it’s actually more desirable not to leave. Its jack-in-the-box will startle you the first time, but becomes tiresome pretty quickly. 

Although the RTP is not especially generous, the maximum potential payout is pretty good, while the game’s volatility is nicely balanced. I actually triggered the Escape feature with just my second spin.

Once you get past the needlessly complex bet selection mechanism, House of Fun is a perfectly enjoyable game that’s well-suited to all bankrolls.
