Our Extra Chilli review picks up where the blockbuster slot Bonanza left off. Apparently, the miner who struck gold at Mt. Cashmore has a new job – collecting hot chillies. 

Big Time Gaming’s dynamic Megaways engine makes a comeback in this highly-volatile slot, as does the extra reel feature. What’s more, there’s a potential payout of 20,000x on display, plus an RTP of 96.41%.

Extra Chilli Details, RTP and Volatility

Not much has changed from Bonanza, the game which put the Megaways mechanic on the map. The layout still comprises six reels of between two and seven symbols, with an additional horizontal reel. This format creates up to 117,649 paylines, dubbed “ways to win”.

The Extra Chilli slot RTP is usually 96.19%. However, the Feature Drop mechanic causes the RTP to increase, varying from 96.26% to 96.82%. 

In addition, just like its predecessor, the game is highly-volatile. Players can wager any amount from $0.40 to $25 for a chance to win up to 20,000x their stake. 

Theme & Graphics in Extra Chilli

This Big Time Gaming title subtly combines Mexican and Chilli slot themes. Legend has it that the old miner from the Bonanza slot retired to Mexico, spending his days at the market, exchanging his gems for chilli. 

As such, the slot is set in an open-air marketplace, with the reel grid flanked by chilli peppers, garlic and vegetables on both sides. In the backdrop are some extremely colorful stalls, while the top of the grid displays the number of paylines on each spin. 

For a 2018 release, Extra Chilli does have fairly good graphics. And although the tonal contrast leaves much to be desired, the overall display does have some aesthetic appeal. There’s also a festive soundtrack thrown in to spice things up.

Extra Chilli Slot Features

At first glance, Extra Chilli might appear rather ordinary, but on closer inspection, you’ll find some of Big Time Gaming’s signature twists. Let’s take a look.

Regular Symbols

Four chili peppers and six playing card icons 9 through A are the regular symbols in this slot. The latter pay between 0.1x and 0.2x when landing three of the same type, up to 1.75x for a combination of six. 

As for the chillies, they appear in green, blue, red and purple colors. The purple pepper pays the highest, with 50x for six of its kind. What’s more, this is the only symbol with a payout for two on a payline.

Wilds

An image of three lit firecrackers is the wild symbol. This substitutes for all others, except for the scatters and Feature Drop symbols. 

Scatters

Spell out the word “HOT” using the H, O and T scatters to trigger eight free spins. Extra golden scatters can still appear, rewarding you with an additional four free spins for each. 

There’s also a free spins scatter that’s unique to the bonus round. Styled as sacks of red chillies, these only appear on the extra reel during free spins. Landing three or four offers four and eight extra spins, respectively. 

Reactions

In many new slots, this feature is known as “Avalanche” or “Cascading Reels”. Slot veterans will know the drill. After a win, all symbols involved in the combination disappear, causing the rest of the icons to drop. Newer symbols then appear from above to fill in the spaces created. 

Feature Drop

For the price shown to the right of the reels, you can buy your way straight into the slot’s free spins bonus. Purple-colored Feature Drop symbols may also land on the reels, reducing the cost. Occasionally, this value may drop to zero, causing the feature to trigger automatically. 

Free Spins

Before heading into the free spins round, you’ll have the chance to try your luck and increase the number of bonus plays. Press “Gamble” to spin a wheel with up to 24 free spins available. However, you could also leave with zero spins. 

Opt out of the gamble feature by clicking “Collect”. Doing so takes you to the bonus game with the number of free spins that initially triggered the feature. 

Unlimited win multipliers are active throughout the free spins round. The multiplier starts at x1, increasing by one after each reaction.

Extra Chilli Review – Our Final Verdict

Considering the buzz generated by Bonanza after its release, it makes perfect sense that Big Time Gaming would deliver a sequel. However, the two slots have completely contrasting themes, which doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Nevertheless, Extra Chilli does manage to improve upon the original, introducing a few spicy new features. The gamble wheel and Feature Drop immediately spring to mind, both of which help you along the way to an impressive maximum potential payout.

Sadly, the graphics don’t really match the quality gameplay. You can put that down to the game’s age, but they weren’t exactly mind-blowing upon initial release, either. Still, this doesn’t take away too much from the excitement, and Extra Chilli is definitely one to keep coming back to.
