Theme & Graphics in Medusa’s Stone

Medusa the Gorgon needs no introduction. The only mortal of three sisters, this classical figure is famous for her snake hair and fearsome gaze, capable of turning men to stone. Pragmatic Play simply rehashes this common Greek mythology theme, infusing its own familiar design approach. 

Compared to Medusa Strike by the same developer, this is a much more nicely-presented slot. First of all, there are symbols that actually mirror the myth, including Perseus and Andromeda. Also, the monster’s lair, which is visible in the background, is aptly eerie-looking, with depictions of a severed head and snakes. 

The Medusa’s Stone slot features the eponymous character as a scatter symbol. Expect to see characters become stone, true to the Gorgon’s nature, during the bonus rounds. To cap this off, there’s a heroic soundtrack and occasional voice effects.

Regular Symbols

Playing cards A, K and Q are the lowest paying symbols in Medusa’s Stone. They all pay 0.25x, 0.5x and 1x for three, four and five matching symbols on a payline. 

At the midpoint of the paytable, we find a hoplite helmet and a sword, both of which return 2x whenever you land five-of-a-kind.

Character icons are the highest-paying symbols. The female character, Andromeda, pays up to 5x, but Hercules promises the greatest returns, offering 25x for five on a payline. Other symbols are Perseus and Eusebios, returning a maximum of 12.5x and 10x, respectively.

Wilds

There is no regular wild symbol in Medusa’s Stone. However, as you’ll see later on, character icons can substitute for other symbols during a bonus feature. 

Scatters

Interestingly, there are two bonus symbols here, both of which are depicted by the severed head of Medusa herself. The Super Bonus is red, while the standard Bonus symbol is green.

They appear exclusively on the first, third and fifth reels, ultimately triggering one of two free spins features. 

Medusa Spin

This can randomly trigger at any point, even during a bonus feature. When it does, all character symbols in view on the three middle reels transform into stone wilds. They remain sticky on the grid until forming a win. 

Free Spins

Landing at least three Bonus scatters earns you ten free spins. 

During a Medusa Spin, all stone wilds carry a multiplier, ranging from 2x to 6x. If these wilds form part of a combination, multipliers are added together and applied to the winnings. 

Super Free Spins

This feature is activated by three or more Super Bonus scatters. Here, the Medusa Spin occurs more frequently, while multiplier values range from 4x to 8x.

Medusa’s Stone Review – Our Final Verdict

Pragmatic Play has clearly learned a lesson from Medusa Strike, its last experiment with this story. By comparison, Medusa’s Stone feels like a breath of fresh air. Still, it’s a long way from the quality we saw in Gates of Olympus, or Zeus vs Hades: Gods of War. 

This slot promises a 7,000x maximum potential win, which isn’t terrible, but is quite average compared to similar titles. On the bright side, the graphics and visual effects in Medusa’s Strike are sublime. 

We did also enjoy the addition of two distinct bonus features. Hitting a Medusa Spin during the Super Free Spins game offers a real buzz. 

Mythology fans and high rollers will enjoy this one, either for its rich visuals, or the expansive betting range. All things considered, the slot is a welcome addition to the many mythology-themed slots out there.
