We’re not really sure where the name Wildies comes from. Perhaps it’s a play on a famous cafe somewhere in the world that this writer is too ignorant to know about. That would be our best guess, since the setting is a cozy looking coffee and cake shop.

You’ll instantly recognise the slot as a Pragmatic Play game, with the familiar control panel and brightly-colored symbols. It gives the same kind of vibe as games like Sweet Bonanza and Sugar Rush. 

Accompanying your play is the hum of a busy coffeehouse, with clinking cups and chitter-chatter, punctuated by the sound of traffic from the street. 

A cafe is certainly an usual theme for a slot. Not many others spring to mind besides BGaming’s Bob’s Coffee Shop. Though that particular game is more about space cakes than Black Forest gateau.

Now to the main part of our Wildies review. It’s time to assess the features and symbols of this Pragmatic Play title.

Regular Symbols

Eight regular symbols exist in the Wildies slot. The four lower-paying symbols are playing card icons J through A, all of which pay the same. You’ll receive 0.2x, 0.4x and 1x whenever you land three, four or five on a payline.

The higher-paying symbols are in keeping with the cafe theme. A colorful candy cane awards up to 12x, followed by a tempting cup of coffee that pays 16x for five-of-a-kind. 

Next is a purple dessert topped with cream that returns 24x for five on a line. Finally, the most valuable of all is the cake, which offers prizes worth 2x, 6x and 30x.

Wilds

The wild symbol is a sandwich cookie with a pink filling, reminiscent of a Vienna finger. As with most real money slots, this substitutes for other regular symbols to form wins. However, due to its unusual size, it always covers two positions on the reels.

There are also prizes for collecting multiple wilds. Three, four and five on a payline returns the same as the highest-paying regular symbol: 2x, 6x and 30x.

Scatters

We’re not entirely sure what the scatter is meant to be. Perhaps a slice of pink marble cake? Whatever it is, it sure looks appealing. And not just because it can trigger a bonus of six free spins, which we’ll discuss shortly in this Wildies review.

Wild Respins

If a wild symbol appears during the base game, a respin is triggered. The wild stays on the reels for this spin, potentially earning you extra rewards.

Should additional wilds appear during the respin, the feature will retrigger a maximum of four times. Each extra wild also carries a multiplier, starting with 2x, followed by 3x, 5x and 10x.

Free Spins

Land at least three scatters to trigger free spins. The game begins with a wild randomly placed onto the grid, which moves to a new position for every spin. Any additional wilds also remain in play for the duration of the bonus feature, with multipliers as described above.

If a scatter lands, it will be collected. For every three gained, an extra wild is added to the reels. Triggering the bonus with four or five scatters means the round begins with extra wilds and some scatters already collected.

Wildies Review – Our Final Verdict

A cafe has to be one of the quirkier slot themes around. We can’t think of many similar titles, anyway, which has to be a positive. Even though many familiar Pragmatic Play elements can be seen here, at least the developer is trying something different, no matter how minor. 

The 2×1 wild symbol is the star of the show, and the game’s few features center on this. Its novelty wears off fairly quickly, but the gameplay is still entertaining enough. The wild respins feature is certainly a welcome addition, but it’s really just a mini version of the free spins bonus.

We can’t see this becoming an all-time classic. But it’s definitely a nice slot to keep you busy while enjoying coffee and cookies.
